Look for recurring friction
The decision is less about a fixed headcount and more about responsibility. Repeated account problems, inconsistent device setup, unclear vendor ownership and unresolved support requests suggest that technology needs a defined function.
Map the responsibilities
List what must be covered: access, onboarding, backups, support, procurement, security practices and planning. Identify which responsibilities need internal ownership and which could be supported externally.
Choose a proportionate structure
A smaller organisation may need a technology owner supported by a service partner. A larger business may need specialist roles. Set expectations, document processes and revisit the structure as the organisation changes.
